Dyslexia Assessments

Parents & school

What can I ask school to do?

Your child does not need a dyslexia diagnosis before school can provide support. Start with what is happening, what has already been tried and whether it is helping.

You and school are on the same team.

If your child goes to school in England

  • Speak to the class teacher, form tutor or SENCO.
  • Ask what difficulties school has noticed and what support is currently in place.
  • Ask how progress is being reviewed.
  • Where appropriate, discuss SEN Support and the Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle.

If your child goes to school in Wales

  • Speak to the teacher and/or ALNCo.
  • Ask what additional learning needs have been identified or are being explored.
  • Ask what additional learning provision is being used and how progress is reviewed.
  • Where appropriate, ask whether an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is relevant.

Keep a few useful notes

Write down important school conversations, support that has been tried, what helped and whether progress followed. You do not need to document everything.

If things still are not improving

Still unsure?

Send me a message.

Tell me what you are noticing and I’ll review it and suggest a way forward.
